Having excelled as a junior athlete in South Africa in rugby, athletics and motocross, and with a promising rugby career stopped short due to injury, Vern continued his passion for rugby by coaching at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg. He then went on to manage a number of Health Clubs and started a Fitness Equipment and Clothing Manufacturing Company which led to the opening of his first Performance Training Centre. After successfully coaching a number of South Africa’s top athletes and teams in Netball and Rugby, including the South African Netball team, the Boland Cavaliers Rugby team and the South African Rugby Union Academy, he took up a position as the first Professional Rugby Trainer in Italy. He was then offered a position with Team Prada, an America’s Cup Yacht Racing team and had a difficult decision of having to turn down a coaching role with the Italian National Rugby Team. He has continued his career in sailing both as an athlete (grinder) and as the Head of Sports Science and Medicine for Team Luna Rossa.

Vern’s main area of expertise is in developing high performance athletes by combining innovative training methods with optimum athlete support structures. This includes designing specialised training facilities and putting together a team of high performance support staff in order to create an optimal environment for athletic performance.
